NASA: Case Study



INNOVIM developed a distributed data system for the Suomi National Polar Orbiting Earth Satellite System Preparatory Project. The Suomi National Polar Orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite was successfully launched into a polar orbit on October 28, 2011, carrying five remote sensing instruments:

  • Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)
  • Crosstrack Infrared Sounder (CrIS)
  • Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS)
  • Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS)
  • Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) instrument

Currently, as part of the collaborative NOAA/NASA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), these SNPP instruments collect critical data to improve weather forecasts and to increase understanding of long-term climate change.   

The distributed data system INNOVIM developed, the NASA Science Data Segment (SDS), principally provides NASA the capabilities to assess and verify the quality of S-NPP products identified as Raw Data Records (RDRs), Sensor Data Records (SDRs), Environmental Data Records (EDRs), and Temperature Data Records (TDRs).  The distributed nature of this data distribution system was established by physically housing each Product Evaluation and Test Elements (PEATEs) within one of five Climate Analysis Research Systems (CARS) located at either at a NASA or a university institution.

Project Benefits

SDS is ultimately serving the Earth science community through the high-speed transmission, reception, classification, and distribution of terabytes of Earth science sensor data on a daily basis.  INNOVIM’s work contributes to supporting the science communities and government agency decisions at the national level involved with future critical decisions of understanding climate change.

The INNOVIM team has greatly assisted in the definition, documentation, analysis, and baseline of the SDS Level-3 requirements specification and operations concept document.  INNOVIM developers have also assisted with system design and implementation of the initial release of the SD3E element.  The team has supported external interface definition with NOAA CLASS (ASD), NSIPS, and amongst the SDS Elements.  INNOVIM has greatly benefited the program in its ability to understand and operate the components of the system.
