NASA ICESat-2 Ground System and Operations Support

Under NASA’s Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geophysics (HBG) Support Services contract, INNOVIM provided comprehensive infrastructure maintenance, security compliance, and operations coordination for the ICESat-2 mission’s four critical subsystems. Our support spanned from early system design through post-launch operations. We maintained a highly complex infrastructure of ~30 servers with over 2.5 PB of storage, managed local storage solutions for the Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS), and implemented robust RAID storage architectures to meet NASA’s data locality and cost-efficiency requirements.

We proactively addressed hardware failures, expanded capacity, and ensured security compliance through tools such as Nagios, Ganglia, and Chef scripts, which were aligned with CIS benchmarks and NASA ASCS standards. INNOVIM led maintenance, network troubleshooting, patching, license management, and decommissioning of legacy systems, ensuring full lifecycle oversight. Our team participated in Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews (PDR/CDR), refined Level 4 and 5 requirements, and contributed to operational readiness assessments. We also developed SOPs, monitoring tools, and contingency plans, enabling continuous uptime and operational resilience.

Project Benefits

INNOVIM’s deep integration into the ICESat-2 mission support ensured uninterrupted science data processing, optimized system performance, and full compliance with evolving NASA security standards. Our work directly enabled the mission’s ability to deliver precision Earth elevation data, critical for monitoring ice sheet loss and sea level change. By ensuring 100% compliance with NASA security baselines and delivering a robust, maintainable ground system, INNOVIM significantly reduced operational risk, extended system longevity, and enhanced NASA’s mission assurance posture.

Core Capabilities

INNOVIM’s capabilities span the data lifecycle. Our scientists and engineers create and collect data through sensors located on Earth and in space, manage the infrastructure that supports large-scale data analysis, and transform the results into actionable information through data visualization techniques and decision-making systems.

Who We Serve

INNOVIM serves US government agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Department of Defense (DoD).
