INNOVIM is proud to recognize Paul Sweatman, Craig Johnson, and Jordan Uehara for their outstanding contributions supporting NASA’s Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geophysics (HBG) Support Services contract at Goddard Space Flight Center.
All three were honored as members of the ICESat-2 Instrument and Data Production Team. In addition, Paul Sweatman received the Scientific Technical Support Award, and Jordan Uehara was also recognized as part of the ICESat-2 Instrument Support Facility (ISF) and Flight Software (FSW) Team.
Measuring a Changing Planet, One Photon at a Time
ICESat-2 has been measuring the height of Earth’s surface from orbit since September 2018. Its single instrument, the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), fires 10,000 laser pulses per second and times the return of individual photons to map ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, and forest canopies with extraordinary precision. Those measurements are the backbone of how scientists track ice sheet loss and sea level change. Keeping the instrument healthy and converting raw photon returns into calibrated, science-ready data products is the daily work of the instrument, flight software, and data production teams that these recognitions honor.
INNOVIM’s Role Under HBG
Under the HBG contract, INNOVIM provides infrastructure maintenance, security compliance, and operations coordination across four critical ICESat-2 subsystems, including a complex environment of roughly 30 servers and more than 2.5 petabytes of storage supporting the mission’s Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS). That work has sustained 100 percent compliance with NASA security baselines while delivering the operational resilience the mission depends on. The HBG contract itself supports Goddard’s Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geophysics subdivision, spanning research into water resources, ecosystems, sea level change, natural hazards, the cryosphere, and climate variability.
