The NOAA CPC provides support to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)/Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) to help decision makers plan for, and respond to, food insecurity over vulnerable regions. The African Desk, established by CPC, provides access to  weather and climate data, and products, and conducts in-house professional development training for African National Meteorological and Hydrological services (NMHSs). The current African Training Desk consists of a Climate Training Desk and a Weather Training Desk, and is fully integrated with CPC International projects including the support to the USAID Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWSNET) and the Disaster Risk Reduction Program of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), and the NOAA-USDA Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (JAWF).

Tasks

Diagnose and analyze weather and climate data, monitor the Africa IntertTropical Front (ITF);  provide training on the regional hazards outlook process and the QGIS software; and improve drought monitor and outlook tools to enhance operations.

Solutions

INNOVIM enhanced, and continues to enhance, the regional drought monitor webpage with improved features and data access.  We continue to develop and share the weather and climate hazards information component with partner agencies.
